Support Cape’s Dam & Park with Hays County Historic Commission

Letter to the Editor
Wednesday, January 8, 2020

To San Marcos City Council:

Dear Members of San Marcos City Council;

Situations and points of view are subject to positive change, as we gather more information in order to better handle and understand the issues that face us in our day to day lives, and move us toward our future.

This is a natural process, and should be allowed to be considered objectively, unless that change goes against some fundamental principle that absolutely violates our core values.

Many underlying facts have emerged since the Capes Dam controversy began, and many qualified people and parties have since weighed in to support the saving and preservation of Capes Dam and the existing mill race. This includes many prominent voters and citizens of San Marcos as well as the Hays County Historic Commission.

These concerned citizens and entities have "no dog in the hunt" except to hope and to insure that the right thing is done to preserve a vital part of our San Marcos history and heritage, as well as perpetuate a part of the river that has existed in peace and harmony with nature, for well over a century.

On the other hand, and quite unfortunately, it is inherent in the nature of some individuals to have an uncontrollable tendency to consistently meddle with long established things in existence, in order to make their mark, to reap a benefit somehow, or to save face in a previous mistaken posture, or even out of just plain stubbornness.

It makes absolutely no sense to fill in part of the long established existing habitat of the San Marcos River with dirt.

Please resist this urge by some in our community to destroy this important and cherished biologic landmark, and please take the sound advice and plan of the Hays County Historic Commission to restore the Capes Dam area to its former natural beauty, and to create a park and natural resource that we ourselves, and generations to follow, will be able to enjoy in perpetuity.

Thank you, and may sound logic and reasoning guide your actions.

Sincerely,

David M. Newman
