Tyree's Alzheimer's column belongs in trash can

Letter to the Editor
Tuesday, July 23, 2019

The Danny Tyree column on Alzheimer’s that you printed Sunday, June 21, may be the worst attempt at humor I have ever seen. It is not that I think there is no humor to be found in Alzheimer’s. I have written about some of the funny things my dad said as Alzheimer’s gradually ravaged his brain over fifteen years, perhaps reducing his normal inhibitions. Once, when I took dad and my mother for a doctor’s appointment, we were all together in the exam room. The doctor came in and asked what we were there for.  My mother said she didn’t know why she was there – "there’s nothing wrong with me.” Dad piped up with ”She’s got something wrong with her mind.” We all, including dad, laughed so hard, the nurse came to see what was going on.

There can be humor in Alzheimer’s, but Tyree did not find it. His column would have been more appropriately assigned to the trash can.
