ECONOMIST: Big Mac cost attack

The Economist magazine’s Big Mac index was recently released, providing insights into the cost of the classic McDonald’s burger in countries around the world. The index was started in 1986 to provide a quick look at how currencies are trending against one another. The economic concept of purchasing power parity (PPP) indicates that exchange rates change over time to equalize the global price of an identical basket of goods and services. A single burger was chosen because it is highly standardized irrespective of location (and is ubiquitous and simple to grasp).

On Sept. 1 speed limits vary based on highway conditions

On an icy February morning in 2021, slippery roads and limited visibility prompted a chain reaction of crashing cars on Interstate 35-W in Fort Worth, eventually leading to a pileup of 133 vehicles that left six people dead. State Rep. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg believes a bill he authored –going into effect Sept. 1– could have prevented that.

On Tuesday, staff, friends, family, fellow officers and co-workers took time to celebrate the 36-year career service award presented to Hays County Lt. Dennis Gutierrez. Through his years with the department, Gutierrez has worn many hats. According to Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler who presented Gutierrez with a portrait of the Hays County Historic Courthouse, 'He has been a tremendous asset to our agency, and we are truly lucky to have him. Thank you for your dedication.'
