As the Texas Hill Country landscape continues to change, local wildlife is being pushed to its limits. Golden-cheeked Warbler populations are declining, indicator species in our waterways are disappearing, and migratory birds are being directed off their natural flight pathway.

Bobcats continue offensive hot streak against Central Arkansas, UNT on tap
Due to aquifer levels continuing to drop over the last two months, the city of San Marcos will enter Stage 4 drought restrictions effective Sunday, Aug. 27 at noon.
The Upper San Marcos River Watershed Protection Plan is in place to maintain clean water in this community. Pictured above and below are two views of the C. M. Allen Bioretention Basin.

Just as the city of San Marcos prepares to move into Stage 4 drought restrictions, amid a Monday that saw firefighters heavily engaged in battling wildfires across the region including off FM 1626, FM 2770 and Robert S. Light, which was closed from Smith Lane for part of the afternoon, a group of citizens have worked steadily behind the scenes to protect the Upper San Marcos River Watershed.
On Monday, thousands of students at Texas State University loaded up their backpacks and returned to class. They were not alone as fellow students, including the cohort of freshmen of the Class of 2027, were seen at the University of Texas at Austin, UTSA and other colleges across the region. For TXST, the next few weeks will be exciting as the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce is promoting a Back the Bobcats series of events and competitions leading up to Spirit Week Sept. 10-16.

GOING COLLEGIATE
Hays County residents and visitors can now access crime and arrest data for all of Hays County on one platform hosted called Citizens Connect. The system, by Tyler Technologies, boasts being the first in Texas to have all law enforcement agencies in the same county sharing data on a single Citizens Connect platform.
For seven days, people will be meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the Hays County Historic Courthouse in San Marcos to bring together their power of prayer in the goal of seeking the return of rain to this community. Area churches and others have been gathering periodically in the community over the last several weeks to pray for rain to alleviate some of the intense drought and heat affecting the city, the county and the state. Among churches recently participating here are PromiseLand, Sinai Pentecostal Church, First Baptist Church San Marcos, First Baptist Church NBC and San Marcos Community Church. Rain is forecast as a possibility this afternoon and through the evening as part of a tropical system coming out of the Gulf of Mexico.

PRAYERS FOR RAIN
Acclaimed playwright Carlos Morton will be the subject of a career tribute during the 21st annual Black and Latino Playwrights Celebration Aug. 28-Sept. 3 at Texas State University.
Texas public student scores in standardized testing continue to improve since the pandemic, but more than half of those taking the test still struggle with math and just under half read below grade-level, the Texas Tribune reported.
