WASHINGTON (AP) — An inflation gauge closely tracked by the Federal Reserve surged 6.6% in March compared with a year ago, the highest 12-month jump in four decades and further evidence that spiking prices are pressuring household budgets and the health of the economy.

The Rotary Club of San Marcos awarded $35,000 in scholarships, ranging from $1,500 to $2,000, to 17 San Marcos High School seniors on April 24. Students at Travis Elementary School raised $850 for a scholarship for a SMHS senior who had earlier attended Travis, with Rotary matching their gift. Rotary scholarship recipients this year include:
