Lady Rattlers top Westlake in opener, in Bryan tourney this weekend

San Marcos opened its season with a 16-6 win over Westlake on Tuesday. 

The Chaparrals began the game with two runs in the first inning. The Lady Rattlers responded with five runs in the bottom frame. San Marcos’ big first inning was the product of an RBI walk by Ariana Alonso and a 3-run double from Maegan Delgado. The Lady Rattlers recorded 11 hits compared to Westlake’s six. 

San Marcos plated four runs in the second inning to push its lead to 9-2. Westlake and the Lady Rattlers both scored two runs in the third inning. The Chaparrals scored one run in the fourth and fifth inning to cut San Marcos’ lead down to 11-6. 

Then the Lady Rattlers scored five runs in the sixth inning, which was ignited by a walk from Marrissa Villegas, an Alonso single and a single from Andrea Garcia. 

Ciara Bosquez struck out seven in six innings of work during the winning effort. Olivia Lantigua, Melanie Castilla and Delgado led San Marcos with two hits each. Delgado recorded four RBIs, and Castilla and Alonso both had three RBIs. 

The Rattlers travel to Bryan to compete in the BCS Tournament. San Marcos began tournament play against Manvel, results were not available before press time. Tournament competition stretches through Saturday.
