It’s officially watch list season.

Tuesday afternoon, two Texas State athletes were named to preseason award watch lists. Sophomore center Aaron Brewer was tabbed by the Rimington Trophy Committee as a player to watch for this season’s Rimington Award, an award given at the end of the season to the nation’s “most outstanding center” in NCAA Division I.

Brewer started 11 games as a true freshman and made his first start against No. 24 Arkansas at left guard before converting to center later in the year. The Dallas native recorded 54 knockdowns and is one of three centers from the Sun Belt to be named to the Rimington Watch List. Brewer was also named to Athlon Sports’ Preseason All-Sun Belt Team.

The award is named after Dave Rimington, a First-Team All-American center from Nebraska.

Alongside Brewer was senior tight end Gabe Schrade who was named to the John Mackey Award Watch List. The Mackey Award is given to the nation’s top tight end at the end of the regular season.

Schrade caught 25 passes for 286 yards and two scores last year and was named to Lindy Sports’ Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Team. Schrade also served as a team captain last season and became one of three Texas State students to receive the LBJ Civic Leadership Award. He’s one of three tight ends in the conference named to the Mackey Watch List.

John Mackey is an NFL Hall of Famer and became the namesake of the award in 2000.
