Texas State head coach Ty Harrington announced that junior shortstop will miss an “indefinite” amount of time with an undisclosed injury during Wednesday afternoon’s baseball media luncheon.

Sophomore second base and Preseason All-Conference selection Jonathan Ortega will shift over to replace Sherley for the time being with sophomore Jacob Almendarez taking over at second.

“I just try to look at it as I try to be the best teammate I can every day,” Sherley said. “Show up and get my rehab done, get my weight lifting done so I can get back and help this team win as soon as possible. Until then it’s been more what can I do to help the team at practice.

“I don’t think you guys are going to really notice a big difference. (Ortega) is really going to do a good job of taking care of everything he needs to do. He’s really stepped into it, so he hasn’t needed much advice, but I’m always around if he needs me.”

The junior finished last season with a fielding percentage of .957 and was third in the Sun Belt in fielded double plays. Sherley also batted .261 in 2016 and was fourth on the team in hits and RBIs with 57 and 27 respectively.

Ortega played shortstop both his alma mater, Victoria East and for his summer league team on which he’s also teammates with with Almendarez and sophomore first baseman Ryan Newman.

“I got used to them and it’s not too much different than having Luke over there,” Newman said.

Ortega says it hasn’t been that big of an adjustment reacclimating to his old position, although he admits he’ll have to be more alert.

“Second base you’ve got more time and you can kind of be more nonchalant while at shortstop you got to be more locked in all the time. There’s runners across your face and stuff.”

Harrington mentioned how Texas State simply has to have a “next man up” approach in regards to the start of the season until Sherley returns.

“Your opponent doesn’t stop,” Harrington said.
