‘Cats take doubleheader secures sweep over Georgia State

TEXAS STATE BASEBALL

Texas State took both games in Saturday’s doubleheader to secure a three-game sweep over Georgia State.

The Bobcats (20-15-1, 8-7 Sun Belt) began Saturday’s doubleheader against the Panthers (17-18, 5-9) with a 10-5 win in 11 innings and finished the day with a 9-3 victory.

Game 1

Following Friday’s 10-9 win where Texas State had to fend off a late-game rally, the Bobcats found themselves in a similar situation to start Saturday’s doubleheader.

Texas State held a 5-1 lead in the eighth, but Georgia State battled back by scoring three runs in the eighth and tied the game with a run in the ninth.

The Bobcats, however, put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the 11th.

Texas State secured the 10-5 win over the Panthers.

Junior Jacob Almendarez went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Seniors Luke Sherley, Derek Scheible, Dylan Paul and juniors Jaylen Hubbard and Ryan Newman all recorded two hits.

Sophomore right-hand pitcher Nick Fraze pitched six innings and only allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts. Junior pitcher Brayden Theriot gave up the game-tying run in the bottom ninth, but was able to take the win with a solid inning in extras. Junior pitcher Braden Pearson closed out the game with a clean 11th with two strikeouts.

Game 2

Texas State made quick work of the Panthers in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Bobcats scored three runs in the second inning and pulled away with four runs in the sixth. Texas State defeated Georgia State, 9-3.

Sherley tallied a career-tying four hits with three RBIs. Hubbard went 3-for-5 and had two RBIs.

Junior Wes Engle, who got the start on the mound, sophomore Broc Bosse and junior Kyle Bradford put together a solid effort against the Panthers. The trio each pitched three innings. Bosse secured the win and Bradford picked up his first career save.

Texas State notched 31 hits Saturday and had a total of 46 hits during the threegame series, which sets a season-high for a weekend series. The last time the Bobcats recorded at least 46 hits was in a weekend-series sweep against Central Arkansas on April 18-20, 2008.

Texas State returns to action Tuesday in College Station against No. 16 Texas A&M (27-9, 8-7 SEC) at 6:30 p.m. inside Blue Bell Park.
