2017 End of Year Awards

San Marcos just pulled off another improbable comeback win inside Burger Stadium when head coach Mark Soto was suddenly soaked in a victory bath.

It took six years to get the program back to this point. But a district title was finally coming back to San Marcos after 14 long years.

During his tenure, Soto has shifted the Rattlers to a household name that has earned recognition throughout the area. He guided the Rattlers through a handful of remarkable wins, a 10-2 overall record and a district title.

The big plays, huge crowds and comeback wins are what will be remembered most about the 2017 season. But what has become recognized by those involved with the program is the culture that has been established by Soto.

He and his staff preached pride and love to the team all season. This philosophy not only took hold of the team, but a community who has been behind the Rattlers all year. There was a drive to succeed by ‘playing for more than themselves.’

San Marcos had a memorable year. Yet, one of the more intriguing aspects is how the foundation brought together by Soto is set for future success.

Coach of the Year Nominees

Texas State Volleyball: Karen Chisum Hits the 850-Win Mark Amid Successful Season

Head coach Karen Chisum had two seniors and two juniors entering the 2017 season. So it’s no surprise Chisum and her staff were a little worried about how competitive the Bobcats would be.

Entering conference play, Texas State was three games above .500 when it went on dominating run through the Sun Belt. The Bobcats went 14-2 with 13 sweeps in the conference. Chisum crossed the 850-win mark for Texas State as multiple players were recognized with Sun Belt honors at the end of the year.

Chisum’s team that she didn’t have huge expectations for put everyone on notice with a second-place finish in the Sun Belt.

Texas State Soccer: Kat Conner and the Bobcats Took Hold of the Sun Belt

Conner and her group were chosen to finish seventh in the Preseason Sun Belt polls. Three months later, the Bobcats were 8-2 in the Sun Belt with six players named All-Conference. Following a dominating season, Conner was recognized by the conference as Coach of the Year.

San Marcos Baseball: Bryan Webb guides Rattlers to district championship
