San Marcos always knew what it wanted to accomplish in 2017.

The Rattlers wanted another shot at Austin Bowie - A team that thrashed San Marcos at home to win the district championship in 2016.

The Rattlers weren’t content on finishing second again, nor were they planning to finish second or third as predicted. No, San Marcos was laser-focused on claiming the District 14-6A crown.

The tone was set with a 28-0 shellacking in its season-opening win over East Central. Sure, a loss to New Braunfels appeared to be a setback, but the Rattlers learned from the disappointing defeat.

San Marcos ended the non-district slate at 4-1 - A much-improved mark from 2016’s 2-3 record.

The Rattlers garnered attention with a 31-15 win over Del Valle, which entered the year with three players committed to Division I schools and a team with as much hype as any other in the district. San Marcos took care of business against Austin Akins and Austin Anderson. The Rattlers staged a rally against Manor after falling behind 21-0 at the half. San Marcos defeated the Mustangs to the tune of 39-36.

In a rematch for the district title against Bowie, the Rattlers got their chance at redemption. After entering halftime down 16-10, San Marcos scored 21 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter. The Rattlers held on for a 31-26 victory to claim their first district championship since 2003.

With a district title in hand, the Rattlers needed another comeback after Round Rock Westwood took a 29-0 lead in the second quarter of the Bi-District playoff game. San Marcos rallied to win 64-50 behind 654 rushing yards from senior quarterback Prudy Calderon and junior running back Jamon Johnson, and two second-half turnovers - an interception from senior cornerback Demarcus Hall, and a fumble recovery by senior linebacker Josh Banda.

San Marcos’ season came to an end against Spring Westfield in the Area playoffs. Despite the disappointing ending, the Rattlers put together an outstanding season that had all of San Marcos beaming with Rattler pride.
