2017 End of Year Awards

San Marcos was down early to the district favorite Austin Bowie. But the Rattlers fought through like they did all season. The second half comeback included a 101-yard kickoff return from Jamon Johnson , capitalizing on turnovers and two late touchdowns by the District MVP - Prudy Calderon.

In a 3-minute span, the Rattlers completely shifted momentum in their favor with three consecutive scores. San Marcos went on to win its first district title in 14 years, 31-26, and hold up the trophy for a community that backed the Rattlers throughout the season.

Moment of the Year Nominees:

San Marcos Football: Rattlers execute kickoff-return pitchback to spark comeback

The Rattlers had a huge hole to climb out of in the first round of the playoffs this year. Down 29-0, San Marcos was looking for life for their home crowd to build on. One of the most exciting plays came in second half when the Rattlers began to chip away at the Westwood lead.

Junior Jesus Aldana fielded a kick as defenders made their way downfield. It appeared Aldana was getting dragged down when he turned, saw Johnson and pitched the ball back before being brought to the ground. Momentum was back in San Marcos’ favor when Johnson took the kick return down the home-sideline and brought the game within 14.

Texas State Volleyball: Comeback win over I-35 rival UTSA inside Strahan Coliseum

The Bobcats found themselves on the verge of getting swept in front of 1,062 fans when the Roadrunners visited San Marcos for the Creeds & Crests Classic in September. Texas State had lost the first two sets - 25-27, 23-25 - before going on a three-set run to pull off the comeback and shock UTSA, 3-2.

San Marcos Baseball: Rattlers claim district championship: The Rattlers and the Bulldogs were forced into extra innings with a district title on the line in the final 14-6A matchup of the season. San Marcos had its fair chance of closing the game before extra innings but Bowie kept answering.

In the 10th inning, Senior shortstop Brandon Tobias connected at the plate and hit a triple off the wall before senior third baseman Brandon Miranda hit the go-ahead RBI. Senior pitcher Jonathan Moreno was called on in relief and closed the door on Bowie by going three up, three down. San Marcos secured its first district championship since 2010 with the win over the Bulldogs.

San Marcos Powerlifting: First State Championship in School History

Senior Jose Hernandez claimed San Marcos’ first powerlifting state championship when he lifted 595 pounds on his final deadlift attempt. His deadlift final weight brought his meet total to 1,685. That mark was 20 pounds more than the second play finisher at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Meet on March 25.
