Bobcats begin fall ball with win in College Classic

Texas State Softball

The College Classic Fall-Ball tournament on Saturday marked the first time Texas State was on the field this year. The Bobcats traveled to Houston with a doubleheader scheduled against the Houston Cougars and the Galveston College Whitecaps.

Junior pitcher Randi Rupp got the start inside the circle for Texas State to start the weekend and had a strong showing. Rupp pitched for five innings without giving up a run and recorded eight strikeouts. The last two innings saw two freshman pitchers in Maria Flores and McKenna Fryar.

Houston got within two runs of the lead but were unable to recover from the deficit behind senior shortstop Ariel Ortiz’s three-run home run. Texas State went on to score one more run following a fielder’s choice and secured the win, 4-2.

Fryar got the start against the Whitecaps and pitched three scoreless innings before freshman Meagan King got some work. Both Fryar and King kept the Whitecaps off the board as the offense produced 10 runs. Freshman outfielder ArieAnne Bell finished the game 2-for-3 with four runs batted in and a three-run home run.

A handful of Bobcats contributed to the 10-0 win. Sophomore second baseman Bailee Carter and senior catcher Jaelyn Young recorded a run batted in each while freshmen Tara Oltmann and Mari Cranek took advantage of their opportunity to get some playing time. Oltmann went a perfect 2-for-2 at the play while Cranek drew one walk and drove in a run.

Texas State will continue its Fall ball schedule next weekend when they host the Texas State Round Robin. The tournament will include contests against Temple College and Texas A&M International. The first game against Temple College is scheduled to start on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. inside Bobcat Softball Stadium.
