Bobcats cruise to win over Incarnate Word

Texas State put together a dominant performance over Incarnate Word claiming a 74-33 win on Wednesday. 

The Bobcats (2-0) shut down the Cardinals (0-3). Texas State held Incarnate Word to a 23.9 shooting percentage. The Bobcats only allowed the Cardinals to score 10 points in the final 20 minutes of Wednesday’s game inside the McDermott Center in San Antonio. 

Texas State was aided by staying out of foul trouble. The Bobcats only allowed Incarnate Word to take two free throws. 

Texas State’s offense connected on 11-of-23 3-pointers, while outrebounding its opponents, 52-37, including 16 offensive rebounds. 

The Bobcats began Wednesday’s contest in fiery fashion. Texas State outscored the Cardinals’ 22-9 in the opening quarter. The Bobcat offense added another 21 points in the second period to take a 43-23 lead into the half. 

Texas State outscored Incarnate Word, 31-10, in the second half to secure the 74-33 win.

Junior guard Toshua Leavitt led the Bobcats with a game-high 20 points. Senior guard Taeler Deer recorded 14 points and seven rebounds against the Cardinals. Sophomore guard Brooke Holle tallied 13 points. Senior forward Ericka May led Texas State with 12 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds. May also added three points, one assist and one steal. 

Graduate transfer forward Zelor Massaquoi recorded eight rebounds and four points. Freshman forward Jayla Johnson added six points and four rebounds.

Texas State’s win over Incarnate Word marked the first time it’s began the season with two consecutive wins since the 2012-13 campaign. This is also the first time since the 1980-81 season that the Bobcats won their first two road games of the season. 

Texas State remains on the road when it takes on TCU on Saturday in Fort Worth at 2 p.m.
