Bobcats extend winning streak with victory over UT Rio Grande Valley
Texas State extended its winning streak to eight games with a 77-68 win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
Senior guard Tre Nottingham led the Bobcats with 19 points followed by junior guard Nijal Pearson, who tallied 15 points. Junior forward Eric Terry added 15 points and senior forward Alex Peacock recorded 10 points.
Texas State (10-1) got off to a slow start against the Vaqueros (7-5) inside UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg.
The Vaqueros scored the game's first five points. But the Bobcats evened the score with a 3-pointer from Nottingham and a bucket from Terry.
UTRGV, however, continued to control the game as it regained the lead and pushed it out to 16-12.
Texas State seized control with four consecutive layups to grab a 20-16 advantage.
The Bobcats and Vaqueros battled back and forth with UTRGV taking a 25-24 lead. But back-to-back 3-pointers from Nottingham and Peacock gave Texas State a 34-28 lead with just over four minutes left in the opening half.
The Bobcats took a 39-35 lead into the intermission.
Texas State started the second half strongly with a 16-6 run to go on top 57-41.
The Vaqueros battled back though to get within six points twice. With a 70-64 lead, Texas State began to put the game away at the free throw line.
UTRGV cut the deficit to 73-67 with 35.8 second left in regulation with a 3-pointer from junior forward Lesley Warner II, who scored a game-high 20 points on Saturday.
But Texas State closed out the game with a 77-68 win.
The Bobcats are off to the second best start in program history with their 10-1 record after Saturday’s win. Texas State’s record matches the 1952-53 season when the Bobcats held the exact same record.
Texas State travels to take on Arkansas (7-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark.
