Bobcats knock off Fresno State in home opener

Texas State had an all-around performance on Saturday when it started a four-game home stint against Fresno State. The Bobcats only scored 11 points in the first quarter before getting hot and running away with the game.

A 27-point second quarter and 22-point third quarter put the game out of reach en route to a 76-59 win over the Bulldogs. Texas State improved to 4-1 on the season with six non-conference games remaining on the schedule.

After a slow start, the offense came alive behind junior guard Toshua Leavitt. Leavitt recorded a new career-high in scoring with 28 points. She also knocked down six 3-pointers to match a season-high. The game also marked the third time Leavitt scored 20-plus points for the Bobcats.

Texas State had three more players end the night with double-digit scoring. Senior guard Taeler Deer had 13 point with four assist, while guards Chania Wright and Zelor Massaquoi recorded a career-best 10 points. The Bobcat bench was led by Wright who finished 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. 

Senior forward Ti’Aira Pitts established herself in the post and had kept control all evening. Pitts had a career-best 11 rebounds as senior forward Ericka May and Deer recorded three rebounds of their own. As a whole, Texas State pulled down 15 offensive rebounds and converted them to 17 second-chance points. 

May tied a career-high in assists (10) to contribute to the 20 assist the Bobcats ended the game with. Texas State forced 19 turnovers along with forcing the Bulldogs into some tough shots. Fresno State finished 18-of-57 from the field (31.6 percent) and 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from behind the arc.

Texas State opened the season with four straight road games and came away with three wins. The four-game home stint continues for the Bobcats with the Houston Cougars scheduled to visit tonight. The Bobcats and the Cougars will tip off inside Strahan Coliseum at 7 p.m.
