Texas State went undefeated over the weekend and closed out strong against Arizona State to take home the title in the Sparky Classic on Saturday.

The Bobcats had earned their place in the championship round after picking up wins over Gonzaga and Northern Arizona, dropping just one set over the span of the two matches.

The Sun Devils kept things tight in the early going. Tied at 21-21 in the first frame, the Bobcats scored four of the final five points to earn their first win of the game.

Arizona State fought even harder in the second set. Down 22-12, the team went on an 11-1 run to tie the game up at 23-23. Texas State found its footing again, though. Two kills and a block by freshman outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald helped the Bobcats secure the frame, 28-26.

The team rode the momentum into the final set. The Bobcats closed the match out on a 5-1 run that earned them the trophy, winning the third game 25-17.

The victory marked major accomplishments for Texas State. It was the first win against Arizona State in program history. The Sun Devils were 3-0 all-time against the Bobcats before Saturday’s loss and had their 15-game non-conference home winning streak halted. It was also the first time since 1998 that Texas State had won two tournaments in the same season.

Freshman setter Emily DeWalt was given MVP honors for the second time this year, dishing 38 assists. Fitzgerald also posted a career-high 18 kills, hitting at .500 percent.

The Bobcats will look for their success to carry over as they begin conference play on the road on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Louisiana-Monroe in the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
