Texas State secured a regular season sweep over its I-35 Rival UTSA on Tuesday.

After defeating the Roadrunners, 3-1, on Aug. 30, the Bobcats swept UTSA, 3-0 (25-22, 31-29, 25-22), on Tuesday inside the Convocation Center in San Antonio.

Texas State junior setter Cheyenne Huskey paced the Bobcats with 21 kills. Huskey’s 21-kill outing marks the highest total by a Sun Belt player in a three-set match during the 2018 season and the most by a Bobcat in a three-set match since 2006.

Texas State (6-5) began Tuesday’s contest against UTSA (7-3) on a quick 5-1 run. The Bobcats never trailed in the first set. But UTSA kept Texas State within distance. After the Bobcats held an 18-13 lead, the Roadrunners whittled Texas State’s advantage down to 22-21. But the Bobcats closed out the set to win it 25-22.

Texas State jumped out to an 8-1 lead early in the second set. UTSA answered with a 15-5 run to grab a 16-13 lead. Texas State evened the score on the next three points. The set became a back-and-forth affair with the Bobcats earning a 31-29 win.

Texas State took its 2-0 match advantage into the third set and used the momentum to close out the match. Texas State ran out to a 10-4 lead. UTSA battled back to get within 20-19 and 21-20. But Texas State won the set, 25-22, to secure the sweep.

Alongside Huskey’s performance, junior outside hitter Amy Pflughaupt tallied 10 kills. Freshman middle blocker Jillian Slaughter recorded nine kills. Freshman setter Emily DeWalt notched 41 assists and junior libero Micah Dinwiddie had a match-high 10 digs.

The Bobcats return to action at the 2018 Sparky Classic on Friday and Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. Texas State takes on Gonzaga, Northern Arizona and Arizona State.
