DeWalt named Sun Belt Freshman of the Week for fifth time in 2018

Texas State setter Emily DeWalt was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday. 

This is DeWalt’s fifth time to receive the accolade. She’s also received the Setter of the Week award four times this year. DeWalt leads the conference with nine weekly awards this season. 

During last week’s matches against Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina, DeWalt amassed 77 assists, 27 digs, 10 kills and six blocks. 

She tallied 35 assists, eight digs, six kills and two blocks in the sweep over the Mountaineers on Friday. DeWalt followed with 42 assists, 19 digs, four kills and four blocks in the win against Coastal Carolina. 

Arkansas State senior outside hitter Carlisa May joined DeWalt on the weekly award list as the Offensive Player of the Week. Little Rock senior middle blocker Veronica Marin was named Defensive Player of the Week. Troy freshman Amara Anderson earned the Setter of the Week honor. 

 Texas State has a conference high 13 weekly awards in 2018. Alongside DeWalt’s nine honors, senior middle blocker Madison Daigle was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3, senior outside hitter Amy Pflughaupt earned Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10, junior outside hitter/setter Cheyenne Huskey received the Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 17 and freshman outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald received the Offensive Player of the Week laurel on Oct. 10. 

The Bobcats (18-5, 9-0 Sun Belt) continue Sun Belt play on the road this weekend. Texas State looks to extend its 13-match winning streak against South Alabama on Friday and Troy on Saturday.
