Eleven Rattlers earn All-District honors

Eleven Rattlers were selected to the 2018 6A-26 All-District teams, San Marcos announced on Friday.

Running back Jamon Johnson was named to the All-District first team. The senior carried the ball 164 times this season for 1,041 yards and 10 touchdowns. Johnson also received 22 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior safety Therrance Soto earned second team honors. Soto led the team with 112 total tackles, as well as forced fumbles and fumble recoveries with two apiece.

Johnson and Soto were also named the team’s most valuable players at the San Marcos Football banquet on Nov. 29.

Seniors Francisco Menchaca, Brandon Rangel, Terry Stennett, Mark Velasquez and Mhyson Williams were all honorable mentions on the district teams. Joining them were juniors Alfredo Hernandez and Ronnie Perez and sophomores Easthan Mendez and Kannon Webb.

Soto and Rangel were named the Rattlers’ defensive team captains at the banquet. Soto also earned the Bruce Bush Character award, given to “the footballer that conducted himself with the highest level of character.” Rangel took home the Strikin’ Rattler award for exhibiting “integrity, responsibility, courage, strength and unity” throughout the adversity he faced in his career.

Velasquez and Perez were named the offensive team captains. Stennett was the True P.R.O. award winner, given to “an outstanding program player who has demonstrated persistence to success, resilience in adversity and has overachieved to defy their critics.”

San Marcos also featured 21 players on the Academic All-District team, including Soto, Menchaca and senior wide receiver Elijah Edwards as Academic All-State nominees.

“These boys can handle carrying the moon on their backs,” head coach Mark Soto said. “They battled through all the naysayers and lined up each and every night to win. Period, the end. We will always have pride in our hearts as we talk about the 2018 Rattlers.”
