Saturday, July 7, 2018

San Marcos' American GI Forum chapter hosted its final Firecracker Golf Tournament Classic on Wednesday, despite the pouring rain Texas had to contend with.

The day’s events started of with Prairie Lea High School student Sierra Zapata singing the national anthem for all the competing teams, friends and guest in attendance. Tournament Chairman Jesse Sanchez then thanked everyone who has supported the fundraising tournament since its opening in 2000.

There was a special thank you announced to the Hobby Foundation for being the tournament sponsor since 2015 and the outgoing staff of Quail Creek Golf Club for providing its services for the GI Forum Chapter. Also honored, was the American GI Forum of S.Sgt. John P. Nevares-Women Chapter for their logistics support.

There were three teams tied for first place with net scores of 55s. Following a playoff, Saucedo’s Wrecker won the tournament for the second year in a row. Hobby 1 came in second place with Gandar and Hobby 2 closing out the top finishes.

Closest-to-Flag winners for par-3 holes were Gil Rainosek (No. 3), Willie Delgado (No. 8), E.B. Williams (No. 11) and Richard Reyes (No. 15).
