Texas State improved to 1-1 on Saturday after holding off Texas Southern 36-20 on Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

Here are five takeaways from the Bobcats' victory:

Willie Jones III shows off his arm

The sophomore quarterback improved on his 7-20, 79-yard outing against Rutgers last week and showed real progress as a passer.

At the 12:38 mark in the second quarter, Jones found fifth-year senior tight end Keenen Brown over the middle for a 46-yard touchdown that gave the Bobcats a 13-0 lead. The throw marked Jones’ first touchdown of his career and was, at the time, his second-longest completion.

He topped it on his very next pass. On the first play of the next drive, Jones zeroed in on sophomore wide receiver Jeremiah Haydel streaking deep down the right sideline. Haydel reeled in the lob and was knocked out of bounds after gaining 49 yards.

Jones finished the night completing 17 of 28 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown.

James Sherman has a career night

After Jones’ huge 49-yard pass, Texas State couldn’t reach the first down marker and brought in its field goal unit on the Tigers’ 24-yard line. Sherman already was already 2-2 on the evening after knocking in a 36-yarder in the first quarter and a 35-yarder in the second.

The senior kicker nailed the 41-yard kick to increase the Bobcats’ lead to 16-0 with 16 seconds left in the first half. It was the longest made field goal of his career and broke his career high for most field goals in a game. A 26-yard field goal in the fourth tied him for most in a game in school history, becoming the first Texas State kicker to hit five since 1989.

Sherman kicked 5-6 during the game and also notched another three extra points.

Defensive captains team up for record-breaking play

During the third quarter, Texas Southern fifth-year senior quarterback Jay Christophe completed a pass to senior running back Brad Woodard for eight yards. Texas State junior linebacker Bryan London II knocked him to the ground immediately and poked the ball loose in the process, his second forced fumble of the night.

Senior safety A.J. Krawczyk came up with the scoop and jetted down the field for an 82-yard touchdown. It was the longest fumble recovery touchdown in school history.

London racked up nine total tackles during the match, including 1.5 for a loss. Krawczyk chipped in with another three total tackles.

Mason Hays called for targeting

The Tigers responded to Krawczyk’s scoop-and-score with a 75-yard bomb from Christophe to redshirt sophomore wide receiver Tren’Davian Dickson, cutting the Bobcats’ lead to 26-7. On the resulting kickoff, junior receiver Mason Hays was flagged for targeting with the crown of his helmet during Texas Southern’s return.

Hays was ejected from the remainder of the game with 6:54 on the clock in the third quarter without a catch. He will now miss the first half of Texas State’s road matchup with South Alabama next week.
