HS Countdown to Kickoff: Laredo United scheduled to host San Marcos with high expectations

Friday, July 6, 2018

San Marcos will open its first road game 200 miles south of home with a matchup against another distinct favorite — Laredo United.

The Longhorns will host the Rattlers as the District 29-6A favorite, and are coming off a 5-5 overall, 4-3 district record.

An up-tempo spread offense ran by the Longhorns will be led by rising junior quarterback Wayo Huerta. The returning quarterback is coming off a sophomore campaign where he threw for 2,236 yards with 17 touchdowns. Huerta’s performance last season earned him Dave Campbell’s Preseason Offensive MVP honors for the district.

The top returning skill player will be senior receiver Jorge Murillo who serves as a running back at times. Murillo had a total of 520 yards and three touchdowns last season. The offensive line will see most of its talent return with Maurico Rodriguez and Jose Juan Garcia leading the unit.

Defensively, United will look to its leading tackler and first-team all-district linebacker last season, David Macias (49 tackles). Joining Macias on the first-team all-district team was defensive tackle Chris Martinez who had 20 tackles and three sacks.

The matchup between the Rattlers and the Longhorns is scheduled to kickoff on Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at United High School.
