HS Countdown to Kickoff: Rattlers continue tough district slate against talented Cibolo Steele
San Marcos continues its navigation through a talented District 26-6A with San Antonio opponent Cibolo Steele in the sixth week of the season.
The Knights are coming off a 9-5 season which came to a close with a 28-14 loss in the Region 4 final loss to Westlake inside the Alamodome.
Replacing eight seniors for a program may sound daunting but Steele has the personnel to plug in the holes.
Another playoff run will be led by a defense that will consist of senior talent at every level. Senior defensive back Chace Cromartie, a Texas State commit, returns after a 93 tackle and one interception season. Senior Xavier Player, who recorded 37 tackles and three interceptions in 2017, also returns to the secondary. Starting at the linebacker, will be senior Jaylin Reed. Reed’s junior campaign consisted of 94 tackles and 3.5 sacks for the Knights.
Offensively, Steele will be returning its young and upcoming talent Wyatt Begeal. The sophomore quarterback led the offense as a freshman and finished the season 9-1 under center. Up front, leading the offensive line will be senior Peter Sele who tallied 28 pancakes last season. Pairing up with Begeal in the backfield is junior running back De’Quavion Thomas. The upperclassman rushed 74 times for 492 yards and seven touchdowns for the Knights.
The matchup between the Rattlers and Knights is scheduled for Oct. 12 inside Lehnhoff Stadium with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
