Lady Rattlers begin district play with loss

San Marcos Volleyball
Saturday, September 8, 2018

District play is supposed to be tight. San Marcos kept it that way through two sets.

Senior middle blockers Shyeann Lampkin and Devin Branch led the team with 20 kills combined as the Lady Rattlers dropped its first district match on the road at East Central on Friday, 3-1.

Sophomore setter Julia Antu and junior setter Jade Olivo both chipped in with 22 combined assists for the match as the team fell in its first set, 25-23, then won the second, 25-20.

Something changed in the next frame, though.

The Hornets blew San Marcos away, taking the game 25-7. It was the lowest point total in a single set for the Lady Rattlers all season.

The team isn’t used to blowouts. San Marcos has only lost six games by double digits all season, the most recent being the opening frame against the Lockhart Lady Lions on Aug.16. The Lady Rattlers fell 25-15, then battled back to take the next two sets and the match.

Before Friday night’s slip up, the lowest point total for San Marcos came in its first match against the Bastrop on Aug. 7. The Lady Bears beat the Lady Rattlers in all three frames, including a 25-11 win in the second set.

As one-sided as East Central’s 18-point victory was, San Marcos was able to keep another impressive streak alive. The team has never given up multiple double-digit losses in a single match.

The same held true in the fourth and final game against the Hornets. The Lady Rattlers found their fight again, but couldn’t hold East Central off, losing the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

The Hornets’ victory pushes them to 13–12 on the season and 1–0 in district and moves San Marcos down to 16–14 on the year and 0–1 in district. The Lady Rattlers hope to turn things around when they host  Converse Judson on Tuesday at 7 p.m. inside the Snake Pit.
