Lady Rattlers defeat Lake Travis; Rattlers pick up road win over Austin Crockett

San Marcos Basketball

Both boys and girls basketball will be able to go into Christmas weekend with the satisfaction of coming away with a win. The Lady Rattlers hosted Lake Travis inside the Snake Pit and the boy’s team visited Austin Crockett on Tuesday.

Lake Travis traveled to San Marcos and ended up in a close one as the Lady Rattlers battled all night. Head coach Veronda Kendall challenged her team all year to establish themselves in the paint on both ends of the floor. Freshman forward Faith Philips answered the call and led San Marcos with a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers had an opportunity to take the lead in the closing seconds but the full-court set the Lady Rattlers presented prevented Lake Travis from getting a good look at the basket. San Marcos pulled out a tough one, 45-43, and improved to 5-9 on the year.

Head coach Thomas Acker and his group came out with a 73-60 win, bringing a four-game losing streak to a close. San Marcos competed in dominating fashion as it controlled the pace of the game all night. The Rattlers were only leading 32-30 at half. But the offense took over and outscored the Cougars 41-30 in the final two quarters. The boys team improved to 7-10 with one more tournament remaining in the season.

Both teams will return to the court after Christmas with the Lady Rattlers set to visit San Antonio McCollum on Jan.2. Acker and his team will be in the Hays Rebels Classic on Dec. 28 with their first game scheduled against the McCallum Knights.
