Lady Rattlers secure playoff berth with win over Del Valle

San Marcos Volleyball

The Lady Rattlers continued their District 14-6A dominance when they visited Del Valle Friday night. Every game has become crucial as San Marcos is currently in second place in the district with an opportunity to compete for the top spot in two weeks.

The Rattlers had production from a handful of players in Friday night’s four-set win over the Cardinals (25-21, 16-25, 25-15, 25-21). Senior middle blocker Taylor Henderson led the Rattler attack with 14 kills but had support from junior middle blocker Shyeann Lampkin (11 kills), junior outside hitter Madison Mendez (7 kills) and sophomore right-side hitter Jordan Helbig (5 kills).

The San Marcos attack consistently had production from senior setter Juliana Natal and freshman setter Julia Antu. Natal and Antu recorded 38 of the 45 assist that found Rattler attackers. On the defensive side, San Marcos had a strong showing with 85 digs for the night.

A defensive presence led by sophomore defensive specialist Julia Gutierrez (24 digs) proved too much for a Del Valle offense that was unable to gain momentum at home. San Marcos took advantage early and ran away with the 3-1 victory.

The Lady Rattlers improved to 23-13 overall, 6-1 in district play. San Marcos will have two more games next week before seeing district-leader Bowie on Oct. 24.

The Lady Rattlers will continue play on Tuesday when they host the Manor Mustangs inside the Snake’ Pit.
