San Marcos Cross Country

San Marcos traveled to Walter E. Long Park on Saturday with hopes of qualifying to compete in the regional cross country meet and didn’t leave empty handed.

The Lady Rattlers got things started with the first run of the morning. Junior Mary Finch clocked in at seventh place with a 21:04 finish, qualifying her for the regional meet. Finch was followed up by freshman Eliana Hernandez, placing 25th with a time of 23:12.

The varsity girls were rounded out by Sophomores Arabella Snook (25:19) and Maddison Teague (28:46), Seniors Isabel Rodriguez(26:39), Ashley Rodriguez(26:13) and Anahi Pichardo (29:43).

A varsity boys team that was looking to repeat as district champions came up just short in a tiebreaker with 48 points recorded. Junior Anthony Lopez produced another strong performance for San Marcos with a second place finish and a time of 16:40. Lopez got support from Junior Shaun Haley who finished shortly after his teammate in sixth place (17:33).

Junior Travis Rounds (17:45), sophomore Carlos Hernandez (18:03) and senior Whitaker Reid (18:19) all finished in the top-20 to contribute critical points to the second place finish. The varsity boys will look to bounce back at the regional meet as the runner-up spot earned them an invitation to Grand Prairie.

San Marcos will visit Grand Prairie on Oct. 23rd with an opportunity to compete for a chance to run at the state championship.
