Rattler Recap: San Marcos vs. Akins

Final: San Marcos 36, Akins 10

Key Points

Tonight’s win over the Eagles wasn’t the best performance San Marcos put on display this season. With that said, the Rattlers’ persistence got the job done. San Marcos went into the half with a 17-3 lead but were a play or two away from putting the game out of reach early. The defense had another strong performance with a relentless pursuit to the ball. The Eagle offense was prevented from ever establishing momentum at home. San Marcos had a handful of defensive stands on fourth down and one forced fumble.

San Marcos didn’t utilize its big-play ability like usual. But the offense slowly broke down the Akins defense throughout the night. A backfield that premieres junior running back Jamon Johnson and senior quarterback Prudy Calderon had a few different faces this time around. Senior running back Collin Ramos found the end zone down the sideline in the second half. San Marcos also leaned on juniors Darimikius Garcia and Nate Martinez to carry the load. Despite the slow start, the Rattler offense proved too much for an Eagles defense that ended up on the field for the majority of the night.

Special teams is consistently becoming a factor in these games. The return ability senior defensive back Demarcus Hall and junior safety Scooter Brown present will be vital to San Marcos’ success down the road in big games when every possession is crucial. The duo had an opportunity to score on a return after finding the edge but were ultimately forced out of bounce. Junior kicker Francisco Menchaca also gained the trust of his teammates. Menchaca hit all of his extra points and a 33-yard attempt in the second half.
