San Marcos has taken District 14-6A by surprise with a solid 4-1 record against a talented field of opponents.

The Rattlers’ four-game winning streak came to a close on Friday when they hosted Del Valle, 57-47. But head coach Thomas Acker and his group are currently in a position to bring home the first district championship since 1999.

San Marcos is tied with Anderson with a 4-1 record, however, the Trojans were handed their loan loss at home when the Rattlers visited earlier this month, 68-61. San Marcos owns the tiebreaker and first place spot as it moves forward into the five remaining games of the season.

The biggest challenge moving forward? Acker said it won’t be convincing his guys that they can run with any team in the district. The biggest challenge is going to be how the Rattlers respond to being away from the ‘Snake Pit’. San Marcos will be on the road for four of its final five games.

The first road trip will be in Manor tonight with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m. The Rattlers opened district play with a win over the Mustangs (1-4), 50-44, with a dominating offensive performance. Junior guards Pablo Rios and Ira Benson, along with senior guard Sam DeLeon each produced double-digit points en route to the win.

The Rattlers are in first place but still have a lot of work to do if they want to win a district title. The defending district champions, Del Valle, are picking up momentum and the contests against Manor, Anderson and Akins were each decided by less than nine points.

San Marcos will return home for its last game at home on Friday when Anderson (4-1) visits the ‘Snake Pit’. The final three games of the season will be on the road with Bowie (2-3), Akins (1-4) and Del Valle (3-2).
