The Bobcats went out with a bang.

In its fall season finale, Texas State took sixth place in the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club, shooting  7-over-par (297+278+296=871) at the three-round tournament.

The team got off to a bit of a rocky start. Three Bobcats finished the first round at 1-over-par, 73. Senior Anne-Charlotte Mora and sophomore Geraldine Wong picked up three birdies apiece, and junior Sean Yi Yip added two birdies of her own. Texas State closed out the frame combining for a 9-over-par 297.

The second round proved to be much more fruitful for the Bobcats. Wong went on a tear early on, earning four birdies in a five-hole stretch and finished with a team-low, 4-under-par 68. Mora and junior Sasikarn Somboonsup nearly matched her, the former scoring a 69 and the latter scoring a 70.

The string of strong performances resulted in a 10-under par 278, the lowest of any single-round score in the tournament and in school history.

Mora shot another 1-over-par 73 to lead Texas State in the third round. Somboonsup and senior Sarah White trailed closely behind at 2-over-par 74. The Bobcats finished the third round at 8-over-par 296 and sixth in the tournament at 7-over-par 871.

TCU won the tournament with a score of 11-under-par 853. No. 21 Miami, No. 34 Texas Tech and No. 50 Texas A&M all finished behind Texas State, marking the first time during head coach Lisa Strom’s tenure the Bobcats beat out multiple top-50 teams in a tournament.

“At the beginning of the week I said I wanted to finish our fall season on a high note and we did just that,” Strom said. “Setting a team record and beating the No. 21, No. 34 and No. 50 teams in the country is very satisfying. These ladies are starting to get a glimpse of their potential and I am excited to get to work this offseason to come out of the gates fast as we host the Texas State Invitational.”

The team will kickoff the spring season at the Texas State Invitational Feb. 11 at Plum Creek Golf Club.
