Texas State close road trip with win over Texas Southern

Texas State defeated Texas Southern, 70-56, on Tuesday at H&PE Arena in Houston. 

The Bobcats (3-1) eked out a 21-20 lead over the Tigers (0-3) following the first quarter. Texas State, however, only allowed Texas Southern to score 10 points in the second quarter, while scoring 19 points to take a 40-30 advantage into the half. 

The Tigers bounced back in the third quarter outscoring the Bobcats, 17-16. But Texas State responded in the final frame by limiting Texas Southern to nine points and putting up 14 points. The Bobcats secured their third win of the season with the 70-56 victory. 

Junior guard Toshua Leavitt led Texas State with a career-high 24 points. She hit 6-of-10 3-pointers against Texas Southern. Senior guard Taeler Deer tallied 15 points and sophomore guard added 13 points. 

Texas State forced 20 turnovers in Tuesday’s contest, which is the second time a Bobcat opponent has given up 20 turnovers in a game. Texas State used Texas Southern’s mistakes to score 25 points. Graduate transfer forward Zelor Massaquoi recorded six rebounds. 

Junior guard Joyce Kennerson paced Texas Southern’s offense with a career-high 33 points. 

Texas State concluded its four-game road stretch with a 3-1 record. The Bobcats return to Strahan Coliseum for their home-opener against Fresno State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
