Texas State falls to Mountaineers in Sun Belt opener

Texas State fell to Appalachian State, 66-62, in its Sun Belt opener on Friday. 

The Bobcats received an 18-point performance from sophomore guard Nijal Pearson, and redshirt freshman Eric Terry recorded a career-tying 12 points, but Texas State couldn’t hold onto the game. 

The Bobcats jumped out to a 13-8 lead early in the contest, but the Mountaineers began to find a rhythm and evened the score at 13-13. 

App State pushed its lead out to six points twice before Texas State began to battle back. The Bobcats tied the game at 26-26, 28-28 and 35-35, but the Mountaineers took a 36-35 lead into the intermission.

Texas State started the second half strong. The Bobcats took a 48-43 advantage and then built it up to 50-43 and 52-43 behind a 10-0 run. But Appalachian State recovered by scoring 12 of the next 14 points to grab a 61-58 lead. 

Texas State junior guard Tre Nottingham scored a bucket in traffic and followed it up on the next possession with two free throws to give the Bobcats a 62-61 advantage. But junior guard Ronshad Shabazz evened the game at 62-62 with a free throw. Mountaineer freshman guard Justin Forrest sank a 3-pointer to give App State a 65-62 lead. The Bobcats couldn’t fight their way back and fell to 0-1 in the Sun Belt and 7-7 overall. 

Texas State continues Sun Belt play against Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
