Texas State falls to South Alabama at home, 3-0

It was a battle for the Sun Belt West Division as Texas State squared off with South Alabama.

With the conference tournament approaching quickly, getting those all important three points was imperative for both the Bobcats and Jaguars.

Scoring two goals in a span of six seconds, South Alabama came away with the win by shutting out Texas State, 3-0.

The Bobcats had trouble scoring against a tough Jaguar defense as South Alabama out shot Texas State, 13-4.

South Alabama also had more shots on goal with eight compared to Texas State’s two.

Head coach Steve Holeman said it was a hard fought match against the Jaguars who have dominated the Sun Belt for almost a decade.

“It was a competitive match all the way against South Alabama,” Holeman said. “There is a reason they have won eight conference championships … I thought we competed very well and fought hard. We will take some positives from this moving forward.”

One of the key moments in the game, was when the Jaguars scored the game’s first goal when South Alabama’s Abby Jacobs snuck it into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

Following the goal, the Jaguars stole the ball and scored again when Jasmine Greene hit a screamer into the net to make it 2-0 for South Alabama.

It was a tough break for the Bobcats but a lesson Holeman hopes the team learns from.

“Credit to them for pressing the back pass and picking it off,” Holeman said. “Unfortunately, for us, the ball bounced to the wrong player who made a phenomenal finish towards the back post which is not much you can do. We just have to adjust from that and learn from it.”

Greene added her second goal of the game in the second half to make it 3-0. While the result wasn’t what the team wanted, Holeman knows that South Alabama is where Texas State can be if it continues to get better.

“This is where we want to get to,” Holeman said. “We are not at their level but we are making strides this season. We have had some success up till this point. As a program,  [South Alabama] is where we want to be.”

Texas State goes on the road to Marshall on Sunday at 12 p.m.
