Texas State finishes second at Sun Belt Championship
Texas State finished the 2018-19 campaign with a second place finish at the Sun Belt Championship at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Bobcats finished with a score of 880. South Alabama won the team title by shooting 877 through three rounds of competition. Georgia Southern came in third place with an 882. Troy finished the week in fourth after posting an 886.
"Unfortunately, we did not get off to the start we needed," head coach Lisa Strom said. "We made too many bogeys with short clubs in our hands. We had a chance coming down the stretch, but we did not capitalize on a couple birdie opportunities. "
"For it to end like this is disappointing, especially with how much this group of five have improved from the fall to the spring. We had a lot going our way, but every shot matters. One shot per day for the team score equals 0.2 strokes per person. That is not much, but it made all the difference in the end."
Entering Wednesday’s final round, the Bobcats trailed South Alabama by one stroke.
Junior Sean Yi Yip put together her best outing of the competition during the final round, where she shot for an even par. She birdied two holes and finished in a tie for 12th.
Seniors Anne-Charlotte Mora and Sarah White and sophomore Geraldine Wong went 2-over par during Wednesday’s round. Mora tallied five birdies. White birdied the final three holes to finish with her best performance at the Sun Belt Championships. Wong tallied three birdies.
Junior Sasikarn Somboonsup tied for seventh in the tournament by shooting 3-over par on Wednesday. She recorded two birdies in the final round.
Mora was the highest Bobcat on the leaderboard at third overall. White ended the competition in a tie for 30th.
"I am proud of Anne-Charlotte for hanging in there today," Strom said. "She lipped out from five feet on No. 17 for birdie. I told her we still had a chance. No. 18 played as the toughest hole on the course, and she drove it right where she needed to, hit a pitching wedge to 15 feet, and made a great putt."
Mora was placed on the all-tournament team, who was joined by Troy’s Sarah Harrison, South Alabama’s Carolina Berge and Siti Shaari, Georgia Southern’s Ella Offstedall, Coastal Carolina Jenjira Jinangkul and Arkansas State’s Maria Jose Atristain Vega.
