Texas State’s postseason run in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship will begin in San Marcos, the NIVC announced Sunday night.

The Bobcats will host Rice, Texas Tech and SMU in the first and second rounds of the 32-team tournament. Texas State plays Rice on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. inside Strahan Coliseum. Texas Tech will play SMU at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The winner of each match will meet Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Texas State (24-9) will compete in the postseason for the first time since 2013 when it takes the court on Thursday. This will be the 10th postseason for the Bobcats, and first time they’ll host postseason play since its first appearance in the NIVC.

Texas State’s match against Rice will mark the first time since 2001 that the two squads meet and the first during postseason. The Owls hold a 17-15-1 record over the bobcats. Rice enters the NIVC with a 21-8 overall record and finished Conference USA competition with an 11-3 record.

Also playing in San Marcos, Texas Tech holds a 15-14 overall record. The Red Raiders finished sixth in the Big 12. Texas Tech has a 20-10-1 record against Texas State, but the Bobcats defeated the Red Raiders, 3-0, in 2016. SMU received an automatic bid into the NIVC. The Mustangs finished the 2017 campaign with a 20-10 overall record. Texas State and SMU met in the Bobcats’ Creeds & Crests Classic, where the Mustangs edged out the Bobcats, 3-2, on Sept. 8.

After the first and second rounds, the tournament continues during the quarterfinals on Dec. 2-4 and semifinals from Dec. 4-6. The NIVC concludes on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. with its championship match. The tournament will be hosted entirely by participating teams.
