Texas State's season comes to end after double OT loss

Texas State Women's Soccer

Texas State’s season came to a close Wednesday when the Bobcats fell 3-2 in double overtime against Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt tournament quarterfinals.

In the 106th minute, sophomore goalkeeper Heather Martin attempted to corral a ball that deflected off her and Coastal Carolina freshman forward Mackenzie Gibbs toward the goal. Texas State senior defender Chandler Cooney tried to prevent the Chanticleers from scoring but the ball crossed the line to end the game.

Texas State finished the season at 10-6-1 overall.

The Bobcats strongly began the match controlling possession early in the first half. Senior forward Kassi Hormuth scored the first goal of the match in the fifth minute.

But that was all the offense Texas State could muster. Coastal Carolina held control of possession throughout the rest of the half. The Bobcats only attempted one shot in the remaining part of the half.

The Chanticleers equalized in the 71st minute when junior midfielder Lauren Dabner scored when she hit a shot that found her near the penalty spot.

Texas State had an opportunity to regain the lead in the 80th minute when Hormuth sent a shot toward goal but Coastal freshman goalkeeper Rylee Attenberry made a diving stop.

Bobcat freshman midfielder Renny Moore drew a foul late in the second half but time expired before Texas State could field an attack.

The Bobcats were gifted an opportunity early in the first overtime period when the Chanticleers were called for a foul and Texas State was awarded a free kick near the penalty box. Senior midfielder Rachel Grout sent a ball inside the box that senior midfielder Alyssa Phelan placed her foot on but it was cleared.

Coastal ended the match with Gibbs’ goal.

Hormuth had a team-high three shots with two on goal. Grout added two more shot attempts.
