UIL State Executive Committee to hear San Marcos High School student-athletes’ appeal for eligibility

Wednesday, October 12, 2022

The UIL State Executive Committee is set to hold 11 appeal hearings for San Marcos High School athletes on Thursday.

The committee will meet beginning at 8:30 a.m. with hearings taking place until 11 a.m. Hearings will resume from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Each hearing is scheduled for 30 minutes.

The UIL SEC hearings comes after San Marcos Consolidated ISD Superintendentt Dr. Michael Cardona; Athletic Director John Walsh and SMCISD employee Earl Anderson met with the UIL State Executive Committee (SEC) on Oct. 3 to appeal recommendations made by the District 27-6A Executive Committee (DEC) for alleged recruiting violations, which included a two-year playoff ban for San Marcos High School’s football team.

The alleged recruiting violations by the district executive committee surround 12 students who transferred to San Marcos High School from several area school districts. Eleven of the students played on the same AAU football team, the Texas Seminoles. In August, the District 27-6A Executive Committee recommended that the student-athletes be ruled ineligible for the 2022-2023 season with a second recommendation to ban the ineligible student-athletes for an additional two years due to allegations of recruiting.

Following the Oct. 3 hearing, Walsh and Anderson were both given three years of probation and were also issued public reprimands. The meeting resulted in San Marcos becoming eligible for postseason play, however, the UIL SEC reserves the right to revisit possible postseason sanctions following the upcoming eligibility hearings.

Thursday’s meetings will take place via teleconference and can be viewed online https://bit.ly/3rSFrsA.
