Davis, VFW post sets up food distribution for veterans

Sunday, January 3, 2021

For Laura Davis, feeding veterans is always important, especially in these trying times. It is heartbreaking to think that someone who has served their country would be in need of assistance, but it happens.

Davis is a member of Maurice T. Suttles VFW Post 3413 Auxiliary, and has volunteered to be the chair of veteran and family support. Davis began volunteer work with the auxiliary, the Soldiers’ Angels organization and the San Antonio Food Bank.

While she was participating in San Antonio, Davis realized tha the San Marcos area did no afford this opportunity to local veterans. In working with the Veteran Service Officers, Jude Prather, Michael Hernandez, VFW Post 3413 Commander Stephanie Brown and the Hays County Food Bank, a system was set up to offer a mobile food distribution from VFW post 3413 once a month. All of the food comes from the food bank, and there is not an income requirement to receive groceries, only the proof of service.

If a veteran needs help and asks for it, the program does not question it. Additionally, when the registered veterans are served, the drive-thru distribution is open to the greater San Marcos community. This allows the VFW Post and Auxiliary to serve their community.
