Sunday, March 3, 2024

Celebrating Women’s History Month, the First Tuesday SMTX Film Series will screen “Breaking The News,” an independent documentary film about hearing the voices that are left out of the traditional media narrative. The screening will be held Tuesday, March 5 at the Price Center. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. The event will feature complimentary pizza from Pie Society and beer from Middleton brewery served at 6:30 p.m. The film will begin at 7 p.m.

Directed by Heather Courney, Princess A. Hairston and Chelsea Hernandez, “Breaking The News” tells the story of The 19th*, a digital news startup aiming to combat misinformation. The documentary chronicles a group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists who buck the male-dominated system in their effort to tell stories that often go untold.

After the film, director Chelsea Hernandez will host a question-and-answer session. “Breaking The News” was an official selection in the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and was included in the PBS Independent Lens for 2024. Runtime is 99 minutes.

The First Tuesday SMTX Film Series aims to bring top independent films to the big screen in San Marcos on the first Tuesday of every month. These screenings are free and open to the public. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at firsttuesdaysmtx. com.
