Luling Public Library will host its first-ever art exhibition on the occasion of International Women’s Day March 8 from 12 - 7 p.m.

Titled “When Eyes Speak: An Exhibition of Art Works by Women of Luling,” the exhibit will display works in different mediums by local women artists.

Co-organized by librarian Mona Harmon and library staff and artist Debangana Banerjee, the tabletop exhibit is free and open to the public.

Banerjee is an artist and poet from San Marcos, who curated the 2019 pop-up show to commemorate International Women’s Day at the San Marcos Public Library. This year, the Price Center & Garden is hosting its 5th Annual All Women’s Art Show honoring International Women’s Day. Based on the public’s response to that show, Banerjee wanted to help start a similar event in Luling.

“As a woman artist, I wanted to do something on the occasion of International Women’s Day,” Banerjee said. “I thought that it will be more meaningful if I can do it along with other local women artists. We all create art regularly, and we use different mediums. We belong to different age groups and have different cultural backgrounds. This will be a great occasion to showcase our art together — an important occasion to show the community how local women artists are thinking, how they are blending their imaginations with their real- world experiences.”

According to Banerjee, 13 women artists are participating in the Luling Public Library art show, with others likely to join on the day of the event.

“We are very excited to showcase women’s creativity: their emotions, expressions, power, courage, and sense of freedom.”

Luling Public Librarian Mona Harmon also expressed her hopes that the Luling community will show their support by visiting the exhibition.
