Texas Tunes at Summer in the Park

With the beginning of summer comes the kick off to San Marcos’s longest-running concert series, Summer in the Park.

The Summer in the Park concerts series has been a part of San Marcos summers since 1987. Families, couples and residents from all over the city can come out and hear talented Texas musicians from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday night at the San Marcos Plaza Park all summer long.

Last Thursday, Denton-based band Brave Combo kicked off the concert series with a rocking, rollicking and quaking live performance in front of one of the largest crowds the 31-year-old concert series has experienced.

Founded in 1979, in the midst of the vibrant and raging punk scene in America, Brave Combo is a band that has perfected their amalgamation of world music that includes the sounds of salsa, meringue, rock, cumbia, conjunto, zydeco, the blues and most emphatically polka.

Crowds of people came ready with lawn chairs blankets and spent the evening dancing to the music.

Tonight, Walt Wilkins and the Mystiqueros will be bringing their singular 70’s country sound to the San Marcos Plaza Park for the concert series. This is the band’s sixth year to play the Summer in the Park concert series.

Walt Wilkins and the Mystiqueros has played their iconic blend of Americana, country and rock for over a decade, with four albums and thousands of miles traveled for gigs across the US and Europe under their belt.

Walt Wilkins pulled the group of musicians and songwriters together approximately a decade ago for a festival. According to him, the chemistry worked and they have been playing together ever since.

The band is made up of seven members that include drummer Ray Rodriguez, bass player Bill Small, vocalist Jimmy Davis, guitarist Ron Flynt, guitarist Corby Schaub – who made a name for himself in the Ryan Bingham Band before he joined the Mystiqueros – and Walt Wilkins as lead vocalist.

Walt Wilkins and the Mystiqueros will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. and play until 9:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Plaza Park. The show goes on rain or shine, though if it rains the show will move to the San Marcos Activity Center.

The local Boy Scouts will also be selling refreshments from their booth during the concert.
