Planting conifers in mixed containers has been at the top of The Garden Guy’s fall and winter project list. My wife Jan doesn’t even know this has really been a secret, almost double agent-like operation to get more conifers in the landscape. If you remember, she grew up in East Texas and thinks a conifer is only the longleaf pine.

As I was watching a fresh newborn Gulf Fritillary swooping down to feed on Superbena Royale Plum Wine verbenas I started thinking I wish everyone knew about these flowers that our grandparents grew and certainly laced with native DNA.

It’s noon on a Wednesday, and the parking lot for Shop 1893 is packed. Outside, an older gentleman is watering the plants, which are still in full bloom the second week of December. Various butterflies lilt among the flowers as a trill of holiday jazz pours from the front door of the Price Center, which houses Shop 1893, the Marie Jager Theater and the Art Gallery.

The San Marcos Mermaid Society presents an eclectic holiday shopping experience this weekend from 5 to 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The event will be held inside and around the grounds of Mermaid Capital of Texas Gift Shop and Gallery, located at the Wonder World Park main building, 1000 Prospect St. in San Marcos.
