Operation Turkey is working hard to ensure the homeless and less fortunate receive a warm meal this Thanksgiving for the 22nd consecutive year.

Volunteers from San Antonio, and surrounding cities including: San Marcos, Converse, Somerset, and Helotes, will prepare, package and deliver 3,000 meals to anyone that simply visits the website www.operationturkey.com and fills out the Request a Meal form at the top of the page.

“Operation Turkey is honored to be part of a growing community of volunteers that assist the homeless and less fortunate,” said Brian Tolbert, Executive Director and Chairman of Operation Turkey. “Each year we expand, and this year we anticipate providing 45,000 meals across the nation on Thanksgiving Day. To help put that in perspective, that is more than 50,000 pounds of turkey, 20,000 pounds of stuffing, and 25,000 pounds of pumpkin pie.”

On Wednesday, Nov. 24, volunteers will gather at Sumo Japanese Restaurant — 8342 I-10 Frontage Road, San Antonio, TX 78230 — in San Antonio to smoke and fry more than 175 turkeys for serving on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers will be accepting donations of clothing and care package items. Volunteers will then sort them for staging at various distribution points throughout the city.

On Thursday, Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Day, hundreds of volunteers will prepare, package and deliver meals between the hours of 8am and noon. Operation Turkey says it’s in need of volunteers at Sumo Japanese Restaurant, 8342 I-10 Frontage Road, San Antonio, TX 78230.

In 2020, Operation Turkey operated in a reduced capacity due to COVID-19. We provided more than 33,000 meals to the homeless and less fortunate in Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida. This year Operation Turkey will continue to follow CDC guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

Families are encouraged to bring their children as we have special programs to enlist the help of the younger members of your family. And it will help open their young eyes to the importance of giving back to their communities.
