KZSM: Music for A Spiritual Journey

Sunday, February 26, 2023

KZSM.org showcases our uniquely creative community with programming you won’t hear anywhere else. Now you can tune in Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and be carried into the flow of our newest show, “Carlos’ Groove Box.” Carlos Cedillo is the host; the Groovebox M-707 is a synthesizer and sampling machine that allows several channels of music to be played at once. “The different sounds may be drawn out at random, allowing for happy accidents to happen,” he explains.

In addition to the synthesizer, Carlos plays a five-string bass. And on his upcoming show March 1, he’ll introduce a sitar. He does some pre-programming on the Groove Box, but “mostly the music is spontaneous.” The music is created in the moment: “I hope to get beyond ‘songwriting’ in any specific genre—to capture pure musicality from being in the flow.” Listeners are invited into the flow, living in the moment and connecting into a group emotional state.

“Carlos’ Groove Box” may include some discussion of his other interests, including the Mayan calendar or music history and possibly some of his earlier classical guitar recordings, but mostly he will follow Frank Zappa’s advice to “shut up and play your guitar.” The show may also sometimes feature live guests: “I would love to have Henry Invisible, Waterfly, any other local musicians who understand the new music languages--y’all hit me up!”

Carlos’ original musical passion is the classical guitar. He grew up listening to progressive rock and jazz; Miles Davis during his late 60s and 70s funk era is a favorite, along with a range of international music and avant-garde classical composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luciano Berio.

Carlos’ music forms one element in a creative, spiritual whole, encompassing visual art and the wisdom of the Sacred Mayan calendar. Carlos, Cosmicjaguar, believes “everyday holds a new song, a new vibration of spiritual energy that we can tap into each moment.” To learn more, visit his website, Honeytaco.com.

“Carlos’ Groove Box” extends his goals “to expand consciousness, raise vibrations, enhance spiritual awareness” to community radio. “There are not many live venues where I can share this music; radio seems to be a place for me to express myself unhindered by anyone else’s expectations. It feels good to be in the studio in real creation mode.”
