Bobcats defeat Gonzaga, Northern Arizona at Sparky Classic

Texas State began its run in the Sparky Classic in Tempe, Arizona with a win over Gonzaga, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-15) on Friday. 

Freshman setter Emily DeWalt paced the Bobcats with a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs. Senior outside hitter Amy Pflughaupt recorded 13 kills, while junior setter Cheyenne Huskey added nine digs and eight kills. 

Gonzaga jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the opening set and held onto an 8-5 advantage. The Bobcats took over from that point. Texas State outscored Gonzaga 18-6 to take control of the frame with a 23-14 lead. The Bobcats closed out the set to claim a 25-18 first-set victory. 

Texas State saw itself with a 9-4 lead early in the second set, but Gonzaga fought back to even the frame at 15-15. The Bulldogs took a 16-15 lead, but the Bobcats responded with a 5-1 run to grab a 20-17 lead. Texas State fought off Gonzaga to take the second set 25-23. 

Texas State used the momentum gained from the first two sets to easily take the third set. The Bobcats led 10-3. Gonzaga got to within 15-10, but the Bobcats finished the set on a 10-5 run to earn a 25-15 third set and secured the sweep. 

Texas State continued its run in the Sparky Classic against Northern Arizona on Saturday. The Bobcats (8-5) downed the Lumberjacks (7-5), 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 16-25, 25-17). 

Senior middle blocker Madison Daigle led the Bobcats with 15 kills, while Huskey tallied 13 kills. Huskey added 15 digs for her fourth double-double this season. Pflughaupt recorded 11 kills. DeWalt amassed 46 assists and nine digs. 

The Lumberjacks held a 7-6 lead in the first set, but Texas State battled to take an 11-10 advantage. The Bobcats pushed their lead out to 16-11 and went on to secure the first set win, 25-17. 

Texas State took the second set, 25-21, but came out flat in the third set. NAU took the third period, 25-16. 

But the Bobcats swung momentum back their direction in the fourth set. Texas State won the fourth frame, 25-17, to earn a 3-1 victory over NAU.
