Bobcats swept by rival Sam Houston before conference

Texas State finds themselves in the middle of a tail spin, as the Bobcats were swept by rival Sam Houston with the Bearkats winning the third game of the three game series 3-1 despite a comeback by the ‘Cats.

The Bobcats drop their record to 7-8 overall as Texas State goes into the week of conference with a five game losing streak.

It was a disappointing outing for the Bobcats and Head Coach Steven Trout despite the fact the Texas State pitching staff had one of their better performances of the season holding the Bearkats to an average 3.3 runs per game during the three game series.

“I thought Drayton Brown did a great job throwing the baseball with the exception of the home run,” Trout said following the completion of Sunday’s game. “Also saw some different guys out of the bullpen and what we need to continue to work on.”

The same could not be said for the Texas State offense who was held to an average 1.7 runs per game in the series.

“Our offensive approach was terrible from the get-go, “ Trout said. “We didn’t really make them work as we had 13 fly-outs. It was a disappointing week and weekend. We have to find a way to turn it around with a big week ahead of us with two midweeks and then the start of conference play.”

Entering the game on Sunday, Texas State dropped both their Friday and Saturday games against the Bearkats with Sam Houston winning 3-2 and 4-2.

In the final game against Sam Houston, the Bobcats were held scoreless through eight innings as Texas State trailed 3-0 with the Bearkats hitting a two-run homer in the third inning and scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Aaron Lugo scored the only run for the Bobcats hitting a two-out solo home run into left center field to make it a 3-1 game August Ramirez and Davis Powell both forced back to back walks to give the Bobcats life in the ninth inning.

But the Bearkats ended the comeback by striking out the final batter to seal both the win and the sweep.

Texas State will be home tonight as the Bobcats take on Houston Christian before starting conference play in a three game series against App State also at home.

First pitch for Texas State and Houston Christian is set for 6 p.m. at Bobcats Ballpark with starting pitchers yet to be determined.
