Countdown to Kickoff: Bobcats travel to Coastal

TXST FOOTBALL
Sunday, August 13, 2023

The Countdown to Kickoff Series is back following the Texas State Bobcats transverse 2023, under new head coach G.J. Kinne.

This week takes a look as the Bobcats make a trip to Conway, South Carolina, in a conference showdown with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

The last meeting between the Chanticleers and the Bobcats came in 2021, when Coastal Carolina defeated Texas State, 35-14.

The Chanticleers racked up 498 yards against the Bobcats, with quarterback Grayson McCall tying a school record for most touchdown passes in a game, with five.

The 2022 season was a tale of two seasons for Coastal Carolina, as the Chanticleers started out with a 9-1 record, with their only loss to Old Dominion, clinching the Sun Belt East Division Championship.

However, the Chanticleers dropped their final three games, including losing the Sun Belt Championship Game to Troy, 45-26.

During the three-game stretch, Coastal allowed an average of 48.3 points per game, to finish the season with a 9-4 record.

Coastal Carolina will be under new leadership coming into the 2023 season, after head coach Jamie Chadwell left to become the new head coach at Liberty.

North Carolina State offensive coordinator Tim Beck was hired to take over the program.

Beck was previously the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Texas Longhorns, from 2017-2019.

Chanticleers are predicted to finished second in the Sun Belt East Division according to Bill Connelly’s SP+ Ratings system with an overall rating of -4.6.

The Chanticleers return many offensive starters, including quarterback Mc-Call, who returned for one more season for Coastal Carolina.

One of the keys for Coastal will be their ability to switch offensive schemes under Beck.

But one major concern for the Chanticleers will be the defense, following their late season collapse.

If the offense is expected to not skip a beat, it’s up to the defense to make up for the lost ground.

Texas State and Coastal Carolina have met four times in their history, with Coastal joining the Sun Belt conference in 2017.

The Bobcats won the first game between the two teams, as Texas State defeated Coastal, 27-7, for their first and only conference win in the 2017 sea- son.

However, the Chanticleers have won the last three meetings between the two teams, to lead the overall series, 3-1.

Kickoff for Texas State and Coastal Carolina will be Saturday, Nov. 11, at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.

Kickoff time has yet to be determined.
