Centro Cultural Hispano is proud to announce its own Ofelia T. Vasquez Mexican American Cultural Museum has been given the opportunity to host an exhibition of elaborate Mexican costumes in collaboration with the Chicas Calaveras Organization of New Braunfels. The exhibit can be seen at www.sanmarcoscentro.org in the drop down menu of programs in the museum tab.
The Chicas Calaveras, a nonprofit organization was founded by Ines Magaña Picazo in 2013 and is involved in costumes reflecting the traditional Mexican culture. Mrs. Ines, her daughter, and Karla Valencia each contribute to the design, and creation. In addition, they exhibit the costumes themselves by participating in Hispanic cultural events throughout the state for: “Día de los Muertos and Cinco De Mayo” Celebrations. As per founder Ines Picazo, “My costumes are known for their intricate designs, patterns, and vibrant colors, due to my love to serve. People’s hearts are moved because they can see the bright colors, details, hours of sacrifice, labor of love, and pictures of my loved one on the costumes.”
The goal of Chicas Calaveras is to provide not only for the Hispanic community but the community as a whole, an opportunity to learn, educate, and share rich Mexican culture through costumes and artistic expressions. The Centro museum is currently open to view the exhibit. Please call ahead for group accommodations.
In commemoration of “Día de los muertos” — Centro proudly hosted a “Celebrando con la Familia” (Celebrating with the Family) with a series of activities on Saturday, Oct. 31. Classes on the composition of cigar box altars with photos for “ofrendas,” creation of tree ornaments, and items featuring photos of loved ones for the “Día de los Muertos” Community Altar now on exhibition at the Centro LBJ Street fence.
Classes were held outdoors to help maintain the current COVID-19 Control & Preventions guidelines.
The mission of Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos (Centro) is to serve as a Community beacon for the preservation, development, promotion, and celebration of the Hispanic arts, culture, heritage, and values.
