This year, Santa will make socially distanced deliveries of Hays County Freethinkers Association (HCFA) donations: $5,000 for the Hays County Food Bank and $3,000 to Pet Prevent a Litter (PALS).

Both of these nonprofit organizations have become increasingly important to help our neighbors struggling with the economic stress of the COVID-19 epidemic. The Hays County Food Bank distributes food at no cost to low-income households and others who are experiencing food emergencies because of lost jobs, medical emergencies, and disasters.

PALS promotes animal welfare, particularly by reducing the population of stray pets by spay/neuter projects and by finding homes for pets. In this time of pandemic, PALS makes it possible for people who are suffering from isolation, but have limited financial resources, to experience the comfort and companionship of a pet.

HCFA was established in the greater San Marcos area nearly nine years ago as an educational, charitable, and social organization. It traces its origin to Freethinking German immigrants who came to the Texas Hill Country between 1840 and 1860 seeking freedom from political and religious tyranny. The group meets month ly to discuss topics such as Freethought as a philosophical life-stance, humanism, ethics, science, psychology, philosophy, and religion. Its charitable activities have included providing meals at the Southside Community Center shelter, sponsoring educational events with other organizations in the area, and making donations to local charitable organizations.
